Team Hope met for lunch on Saturday in SYP and it was a chance for Gilbert and I to get to know the students better.

The students spent a lot of time sharing about their hobbies, interests, and also about their first two months at school, the classes they’re taking and their experiences so far with making friends. As time went on, they became more open about sharing some of their struggles; including pressure from parents to succeed and also adjusting to the demands of the university. We had a good discussion about hope and also reframing current challenges against the wider perspective of life.. and had some good conversation about joy, rest and purpose. I think the casual atmosphere was positive as it encouraged them to share.

For an improvement area, we’d like to explore doing something more ‘activity’ based next time and also see if we can change our meeting times to see if more are able to participate.

The event was attended by 4 students. Altogether, we met for about 3 hours – from around 1:00pm – 4:00pm.
