About Lead for Life

The University of Hong Kong’s Lead for Life is offered through a collaboration between the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) and Faith and Global Engagement at the Faculty of Arts. Situated in Hong Kong at one of Asia’s premier universities, we draw on rich, multicultural traditions of Wisdom and Virtue, embodied in the University of Hong Kong’s mottos – both the Chinese phrases, mingde 明德 (‘to manifest virtue’) and gewu 格物 (‘to investigate things’), and the Latin motto, Sapientia et Virtus. We aim to enrich the scholarly discourse on character and leadership education with distinct perspectives from Asian traditions.

Since launching our inaugural cohort in October 2021, over 850 students have joined Lead for Life. We have grown into a dynamic community of students from diverse backgrounds, supported by mentors who are industry and community leaders in Hong Kong. We celebrated our first batch of certificate awardees who completed the programme in April 2025. Beginning AY2025-26, Lead for Life is a 6-credit, free elective course offered through the Faculty of Arts. The two-year course is open to undergraduate students from all faculties and degree programmes at the University of Hong Kong.

We are committed to staying at the forefront of this field by partnering with global leaders, such as the Oxford Character Project, the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University, the Jubilee Centre for Character & Virtues at the University of Birmingham, the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University, Life Worth Living at Yale University, and many more in the future.
