We welcome you to join our mentoring community, as a Mentor Group Mentor or as our Friends Community.
Mentor Group Mentor
In this role, you will partner with another mentor to guide a team of approximately ten students over two years. Your responsibilities include participating in the Orientation Weekend Launch and Group Learning Activity Days, as well as maintaining communication through regular Encouragement & Support Check-Ins. You will also provide annual assessment of your students’ engagement within the mentor group team.
Friends Community
For those who cannot join as long-term mentors, our Friends Community offers flexible ways to impact students’ lives. By participating in the Group Learning Activity Days and Personalised Leadership & Character Enrichment, you can support our students and enrich their journey – whether you commit for just a day or longer.

Since joining Lead for Life, my response to challenging life situations has changed significantly. The programme has provided me with the opportunity to listen to the experiences of various speakers who have faced their own challenges. Their stories have been truly inspiring and have given me new perspectives on resilience and coping strategies. I’ve learnt the value of community and the power of shared experiences. This has made me more open to seeking support and learning from others, which has greatly enhanced my ability to navigate difficult situations. I’ve made great friends and mentors who have been incredibly supportive. Through this experience, I am gradually building my confidence and leadership skills, which has been rewarding.

The memory of my initial encounter with my mentors more than a year ago remains vivid in my mind. Throughout this significant period of growth right after entering the university, I’ve received invaluable guidance from my mentors, who have served as a constant source of inspiration, instilling within me the desire to cultivate essential character traits in all aspects of my life. As I reflect on what I’ve gained during this journey, it is evident that the development of character leadership requires an ongoing commitment to growth, self-reflection, and the guidance of mentors who passionately impart their wisdom.

Under my mentors' guidance, I learned to pursue my passions with purpose. Their dedication and enthusiasm inspired me to reflect on my interests and align them with my goals. This experience taught me that character leadership involves self-discovery and imparting drive and passion to others.
Conversations that builds self-awareness and explore my values and beliefs
My mentors have become influential role models, helping me gain a better understanding of myself and clarifying my aspirations. By sharing their experiences, they have alleviated my anxieties about my future and helped me find direction. Each conversation builds self-awareness and allows me to delve into my values and beliefs. Relationships with my teammates have also flourished, with regular conversations and social media interactions. These connections facilitated skills such as active listening and communication, vital components of character leadership.

Their guidance and feedback have been invaluable in shaping my character leadership journey. Additionally, I have had opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and explore new challenges, allowing me to discover my strengths and areas for improvement. By embracing these experiences, I have enhanced my self-awareness and built resilience, qualities that are crucial for character leadership.

Lead for Life give me my first and most valuable mentor group. Under the inclusive environment, we share our smiles and tears and form solid, respectful and supportive friendships. The advice and support from one another, together with the inspirational sharings from various professionals, become our strongest courage and light during tough times guiding us to discover the better self.
A safe space to share my thoughts and ideas
My mentor group provided me with a safe space where I feel comfortable sharing my thoughts and ideas without being embarrassed or shying away from expressing myself, which I was unable to do so before joining the programme. Through the Lead for Life program, I was able to find a community of people who are supportive and genuine. The mentors have helped me a lot, which I appreciate, especially as an international student who initially struggled to adjust to the new environment.
Gave me a wider vision in life
It was a great opportunity to connect with two mentors who have incredible experiences and knowledge in different fields, which gave me a wider vision in life and allowed me to receive advice from them on my future career aspects and academics. I also appreciate getting to know students from other faculties who have different backgrounds than me. We’ve become friends, and I hope to grow as a team in the long run!
Significantly shifted my perception towards leadership
My Lead for Life mentors have significantly shifted my perception towards leadership by highlighting the significance of our unique characters in honing our leadership potential. I now believe that character leadership can encourage anyone to become a leader, contrary to the myth that leadership is an innate quality that cannot be developed over time. Furthermore, a leader of character can nurture the relationship between themselves and their subordinates, creating a happier and more productive environment.
Encouraged me to adopt a growth mindset
Through my mentors, I’ve learned that successful people view failure, not as a shortcoming, but as essential stepping stones towards their goals. They have encouraged me to adopt a growth mindset, seeing challenges as chances to learn and develop new skills rather than as threats to my self-worth. This perspective has empowered me to take more risks, knowing that I have the inner resources to bounce back from disappointments.
Insight and confidence to develop myself
For me, character leadership means knowing my character and how I want it to be. It means knowing who I am as a person, understanding my identity, and not allowing other factors to change it. During the gatherings with my mentors, they would share their life experiences, which would give me insight and confidence to develop myself, enabling me to take a step on the path of character leadership.
Kind and warm-hearted mentors, helping every student in our mentor group
Lead for Life is a program I truly enjoy, especially because of the meetings and gatherings with our mentors. The relaxed environment allows us to talk freely and receive useful advice. What I appreciate the most about my mentors is their kindness and warm-heartedness, as they help every student in our mentor group, showing care by always asking about our studies and daily life. I feel comfortable talking to them, and their sharing of their life experiences has taught me to be more flexible and resilient in today's changing world.
Good role models I can learn from
My mentors are very humble and compassionate. They are constantly guiding us and listening to us very carefully when we talked about our difficulties. This also reflects that a good leader must be a good listener. I have learnt that developing character leadership will take time. However, I believe my mentors are good role models who I can learn from. Through continuous practice and opportunities, I can shape myself into a leader of character.
